Methodology for conducting phenological studies

Book design for the Russian Geographical Society’s methodological guide to phenological research. The publication brings together scientific terminology, observation methods, species lists, photographs, tables and detailed reference material for both professional researchers and amateur naturalists.

The main challenge was to organize a large amount of highly structured information without making the book feel overly technical or difficult to navigate. The layout is built around three complementary grid systems: a two-column structure for the main text, a three-column grid that defines the proportions between the text area and side margins, and a 4 × 12 modular grid for complex tables, photographs and mixed-content pages.

Additional margins provide space for image captions, references and marginal notes, while a system of arrows and other lightweight graphic elements connects annotations with the relevant passages. Complex footnotes and references are integrated directly into the page structure rather than treated as separate visual elements.

The result is a flexible editorial system capable of accommodating very different types of content while maintaining a consistent rhythm, clear hierarchy and comfortable reading experience.
