Chinese fine art

Art of China is the Russian edition of Reading Chinese Painting: Beyond Forms and Colors, a book by Sophia Suk-Mun Law exploring the history, aesthetics, and philosophy of traditional Chinese painting through a comparative perspective. The book examines figure painting, landscapes, and flower-and-bird painting, connecting their visual language with Chinese philosophy and classical literature.

The design approach was built around the visual character of traditional Chinese art, while avoiding a purely historical or decorative treatment. The cover and interior design combine reproductions of Chinese paintings with a restrained typographic system, allowing the artwork to remain the primary visual element. The composition was developed to create a balance between the detailed, often contemplative imagery of the paintings and a clear contemporary editorial structure.

A particular challenge was working with artworks whose visual logic is very different from that of Western painting. Rather than cropping or treating the images as conventional illustrations, the layout was designed to preserve the sense of space, rhythm, and negative space characteristic of Chinese painting. Typography and image placement were used to create a quieter, more spacious composition that supports the subject without competing with it.

The project brings together art-book design, typography, and image curation to create a contemporary Russian edition while preserving the character of the original material. The result is an editorial design that treats the reproductions not simply as illustrations, but as an essential part of the book’s visual structure.
