Manga: a complete guide
to Japanese comics
Manga: A Complete Guide to Japanese Comics is an editorial design project focused on creating a flexible layout system for a richly illustrated but compact book about the history and visual language of Japanese comics.
The main challenge was to develop a clear and consistent structure for the 256-page black-and-white text block while allowing different types of visual material to work naturally within the layout. The book uses a 125 × 200 mm format, a manuscript-based grid, and a baseline grid that keeps the long-form text structure precise and readable. At the same time, the layout remains varied enough to accommodate illustrations, historical material, captions, and other elements without becoming overly rigid.
A separate layout system was developed for two 32-page full-color inserts. Unlike the main text block, the inserts use a modular grid without a baseline grid, allowing for greater freedom in image placement and composition. This distinction creates a clear visual change between the main block and the color sections while keeping both parts of the book connected.
Particular attention was given to the presentation of historical manuscripts and other archival material. Some spreads required black backgrounds to provide sufficient contrast and create a more appropriate visual environment for the reproduced material. The layout was adapted according to the character of each image rather than forcing all content into a single repetitive template.
The result is a varied editorial system that combines typographic precision with enough flexibility to handle very different kinds of visual content.
